Three and a half centuries ago, the famous
Emperor Shahjahan shifted his capital from Agra
to Delhi and established the city of Shahjahanabad
(now known as Delhi). On the banks of the River
Yamuna, he built the majestic Lal Qila (Red Fort).
Chandni Chowk was built by his daughter
Jahanara as an accompaniment to the Red Fort. It
was designed as a large market chowk (square) with
a central pool close to the Fort. According to
legend, it was the shimmering moonlight on the
waters of this pool that gave it the name of
Chandni Chowk, or "the moonlit square".
Chandni Chowk today is one of the oldest and
busiest markets in Delhi. Chandni Chowk's
speciality is the immense variety of its gali (lane)
markets and their authentic “Indian-ness.” Each
gali has something unique about it. From the gali
which houses the wholesale textiles market, to the
one that glitters with jewellers shops, to the
Paranthawali gali... From genuine Indian food,
delicacies and sweets of more than a thousand
kinds, to sarees with chikan and zaree work.
We are reminiscent of this bygone era of fragrant
legends, magnzificent traditions, varied flavours,
old world courtesy and heart warming hospitality... |
